Premier League: Sunderland Triumphs in Tyne-Wear Derby. This derby has been awaited by both teams’ fans after Sunderland Successfully promoted to the Premier League this season.
Both teams were coming with inconsistent performances this season, but Sunderland had a better season than Newcastle even though they have just been promoted this season.
Sunderland came without O’Neil as he was suspended after a red card against Manchester City last week. Despite playing without O’Niel, The Black Cats were defending solidly and could suppress the Newcastle attacks.
Newcastle were still without Nick Pope and Trippier as they are still recovering from their injury.
The game started and Sunderland showed what they could and dominated the attacking side of the game, but Newcastle also had a solid defense that was so hard to break especially in the midfield where they had Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes that could cover a large area. Both players are also good at attacking and defending, which makes them one of the teams with a solid midfield in the Premier League.
Sunderland’s chances were resulting in nothing and the first half ended with a 0-0 draw.
The second half began with Sunderland’s attack that resulted in a corner kick. Nordi Mukiele took the corner kick that was successfully defended by Newcastle players, but they cleared the ball just enough to find Granit Xhaka. Xhaka then passed the ball to Mukiele who then sent a cross into the penalty area, NIck Woltemade who tried to head the ball out of the field misjudged his header and the ball went to his own net.
After the goal, Sunderland tried to be more defensive and keep the lead. It proved to be working as Newcastle failed to find their equalizer until the full time whistle was blown.
Sunderland kept the lead and won the first Tyne-Wear derby of this season. There will be another derby in the second part of the league and Newcastle will be the host.
Régis Le Bris after the match praised the players for how they play and the way they performed in this game, he said:
“We will enjoy this result, but I am happy for the players, the club and the fans because they deserve it.
“I understood what this game meant to the people of the community really quickly – it was probably on the first day when I arrived!
“I am happy for the fans because it was an important game for them, and they were part of the process today.
“It is so enjoyable to feel this energy and support. The players managed the situation properly.
