Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim remains with his idea about the 3-4-2-1 tactic and philosophy.
Despite a lot of criticism and urges to change his formation, Amorim stood still and said that even the Pope won’t make him change his tactic. He believes with his philosophy that brought him a lot of success with Sporting CP. He always says that the system is fine, but he still needs more components to make this tactic work flawlessly.
One of the issues with the squad in this system is that there is no quality on the left wing-back, a player that is a specialist in that role. The wing-backs in this United squad right now are simply not good enough.
Amorim gave a statement before the 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace when he called out Patrick Dorgu, a player who was signed to introduce the wing-back role in this 3-4-2-1. He said that Dorgu looks so nervous every time he has the ball on his feet and makes too many mistakes when he needs to make any decisions.
With no doubt, Manchester United’s priority aside from the midfield is the wing-back position. Here are potential targets that might be signed by United either in January or next summer transfer windows.

Currently Manchester United are Playing with a squad that built for a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 tactics. in order to make Amorim’s team able to play the 3-4-2-1 with clear strategy, United need to sign specialist players in some area like wing-back. It will help them to play the tactic better and for the players to have a better understanding of the tactic.
Three Players for Each Position for Manchester United

Left Wing-back
- Federico Dimarco
DImarco perhaps is the dream signing for Manchester United, as he has been one of the best left wing-back in Europe. With his contract running out in 18 months, there is talk about a new contract going on, but there is still an opportunity for United to get a deal done.
Dimarco is a very good wing-back with his ability to attack and to defend from a wide area. This season Dimarco is really important for Inter for them to challenge for the Serie A title.
- Theo Hernandez
Theo Hernandez’ move was a surprise for everyone. The 28-year old decided to leave AC Milan to join Al-Hilal last summer, with him still becoming an elite option for big teams in Europe. However, it will be hard to get the deal done in January unless there are efforts from the player to pursue a move.
He is an elite wing-back with a powerful run with clear eyes on the goal.
- Alejandro Grimaldo
Grimaldo was taking part in the unbeaten run of Bayer Leverkusen two seasons ago. Under Xabi Alonso, he scored 10 goals and assisted 15 times in their title winning season.
Leverkusen this season lost a lot of important players like Wirtz, Frimpong, Xhaka, and Boniface. The 30-year old and Patrick Shick might be the only players holding the team not to go into the great downfall.
With the current condition of Leverkusen, United have a chance to sign him in the near future.
Right WIng-back
- Marcos llorente
Marcos Llorente is a very versatile player who can play any role on the pitch. Manchester United might need a player like him in their squad. He can also excel in playing as central midfielder which is also the needed position to strengthen in the United squad. Get more Information about Manchester United on Price In UK
With his contract expiring in 2027, he could be signed to strengthen the squad depth of United’s squad.
- Denzel Dumfries.
Another player from Inter Milan is Dumfries, he is the wing-back architectured player that has been excellent in playing that role. His ability to bring the ball forward and his attacking output could be very good for Manchester United. He is also good at defending the wide area .
Many reports say that Dumfries is still on the list of many big clubs in Europe and also in the Middle East. But his long contract might be a problem on its own for United to sign him in January.
Denzel is one of the important players for Inter this season, currently, Inter sit in the 3rd position in the Serie A table and will fight for the title.
- Daniel Munoz
If Amorim wants an instant impact to sign in the next window, Munoz might be the answer for him. Playing for Crystal Palace in the Premier League where the manager also uses 3-4-3 formation, he might need just a little time to adapt to Amorim’s 3-4-2-1.
