Manchester United are expected to have a quiet January transfer window after they spent £250 million in new signings this summer. They might need to take a step back and wait until next summer to go for big players again.
But that could change as United currently have too few quality options on the left wing-back position, and one name in particular has been linked with the club since last summer.
In the January transfer window, clubs usually go to the market to find back up options for their team because of injuries, or they really need players in certain positions to get better performance in the second half of the season.
In the case of Manchester United, they potentially and hopefully fix their issues in the left wing-back. While they have Amad Diallo on the right wing-back who could give opponents a hard time, they don’t have the same output from the left side. Patrick Dorgu who was signed for this role looks like he doesn’t have the confidence and he makes a lot of wrong decisions.
Another player who has been played as a left wing-back is Diogo Dalot. Dalot’s quality as a wing-back got a lot of attention. Just like Dorgu, Dalot gives the ball too easily and often makes wrong decisions and results in United failing to attack the opponent’s defense.
Ruben Amorim certainly needs a reinforcement in that position, and United are currently tempted to sign for a January premium fee for Semenyo. Antoine Semenyo has been doing well for Bournemouth in the Premier League, and that kind of performance certainly attracts attention from many big clubs.
Amorim has been saying that he needs an attacking minded player to play on the wing-back position in his system. So, instead of a defensive player, Amorim likes his wing-backs to have good attacking attributes and could produce the outcome like a winger, and Semenyo has been seen as a player with the correct profile for that position.

But doing business in January is certainly not an easy thing to do as most clubs are reluctant to release their important players during January. Even if they decide to release their important players, clubs are likely to ask for a big transfer fee.
But it won’t be the case for Semenyo as Bournemouth will be forced to let him leave. Semenyo has a release clause on his contract that could be activated in this January window. With the reported release clause of £65 million, there is a chance that some clubs may enter the discussion and pay the release clause to get his signature.
Many reports from Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein are saying that Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool are interested in signing him in January. Also the fact that his nation failed to qualify for AFCON makes it a more reasonable decision to sign him next month.
Manchester United Have Bigger Issue

Man United have a bigger issue. While wing-back positions are one of the weak positions in the team, they still have a bigger issue in their midfield. The double pivot of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro don’t have enough back ups. With Manuel Ugarte struggling and Koobie Mainoo looks likely to be in Amorim’s plan in a short time.
If Manchester United are about to spend £65 million, it would be better for them to spend it for a defensive midfielder, a position that Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 has been screaming for. Latest reports also suggest that Man United could make a move for Wolves’ Joao Gomes in January.
