Manchester United won a hard-fought match against Crystal Palace on Sunday in the Premier League with the controversial penalty of Jean-Philipe Mateta that got retaken.
Many said that Man United shouldn’t have “suffered” from Mateta’s mistake which made him able to retake the penalty on their away win to Selhurst Park on Sunday. The Red Devils could score twice that day to save them from a four winless games run, but those goals came after the controversy that surrounds Mateta and his retaken penalty.
Leny Yoro tripped himself and brought down Mateta in the penalty area at 30’ minute. It gave Mateta the chance to open the scoring tab of that day. Mateta took the penalty and sending United’s goalkeeper the wrong way, but VAR showed that the ball was accidently touching his other foot during the kick.
VAR then instructed referee Rob Jones to make the official announcement that Mateta was allowed to retake the penalty.
Rob said: “After review, Crystal Palace 14, touches the ball accidentally twice as the ball goes into the net. The final decision is a retaken penalty.”
In the Sky Sports’ ref watch, Dermot Gallagher as a former Premier League referee gives his statement regarding the retaken penalty. He said:
“This is a first in the Premier League because the law was amended because of [Julian] Alvarez in the Champions League.
“What they decided now is because it’s accidental and he’s scored it’s a retake. If he missed, it would’ve been an indirect free-kick. I think it’s only fair. He doesn’t mean to slip.”
On the other side, Jay Bothroyd made a statement that Manchester United should feel done by allowing Mateta to retake his penalty after he made a mistake when taking the first one.
“I don’t agree with that,” he added. “You step up to take a penalty and you plant your foot and touch the ball, it’s bad technique.
“If you take a bad touch, it’s just a bad touch. He’s planted his foot ahead of the ball and has cut across it.
“That’s his fault, he shouldn’t get the opportunity to take it again for his mistake.”
If this situation happened in the last season, that penalty would be ruled out and considered as a missed penalty by Mateta. But after what happened to Julian Alvarez in the Champions League shoot-out between Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid, Ifab decided to discuss the matter with UEFA.
After the discussion, they agreed to update the rule that an ‘accidental’ double touch happens during a penalty kick and it is scored, it has to be retaken rather than ruled out. Read more Manchester United news on Price In UK
Manchester United Won The Match Eventually

After all, it didn’t really matter for Manchester United as Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount scored the goals that led United to their another Premier League’s win.
The win against Crystal Palace is the right response after the humiliating defeat at home against 10-men Everton. On Monday evening. Amorim also said that Palace’s midweek game for Conference League away at France also played a role in their victory in London.
“It was small details that helped. The pace and intensity was better in the second half. I could see that Palace were getting tired at the end of the first half and knew they would suffer if we scored.” He said.
“We went on to control the game well away from our goal and in the opposition’s half. We controlled the game well, but just have to be careful about what we did in the first half.”
