Rodrygo goal against Manchester City

Manchester City came to Bernabeu with a mission to secure the top eight of UCL league phase. This Man City team is in the hot form after winning four out of five goals in the Premier League and just two points away from Arsenal who are on top of the table.

They came to Bernabeu with a strong confidence and believe that they could win this game and climb up the UCL league phase table.

Real Madrid on the other hand came with low spirit after only winning one La Liga game in the last five matches, and losing to Celta Vigo right before the Man City game certainly made their confidence lower this time.

Madrid also came with a lot of injured players and even their main man, Kylian Mbappe who was reportedly injured but he was seen to be on the bench for Real Madrid. They got a lot of injuries in the defensive area with Dean Huijsen, David Alaba, Eder Militao, and Trent Alexander-Arnold all unable to play because of the injury.

Madrid played with 4-3-3 with Vinicius and Rodrygo on either side of the wing with Gonzalo Garcia up top. With the injury of Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal, Xabi Alonso was putting Fede Valverde in the right back position to fill the gap.

Manchester City came without Rodri and Mateo Kovacic who are both still recovering from their injury.

The game started with Manchester City dominating possession of the ball just like they usually do, while Real Madrid were looking passive and just tried to hit City with their quick counter attack..

Real Madrid got their goal first after Rodrygo was able to convert his good run following a counter attack into a brilliant shot into the far post in the 28’ minute, and gave Madrid the lead. With this goal Rodrygo ends his bad record of 32 consecutive games without a single goal for Real Madrid.

Manchester City responded this goal really well at 35’ minute, Man City got a corner kick, and the ball was sent to the middle of the penalty area where Josko Gvardiol got a free header that could be blocked by Courtois, but the rebound went right to Nico O’Rielly who then put the ball behind the net. It is his first goal in the Champions League.

Manchester City kept their attacking intensity, but Madrid also had a solid defense in the first half.

City took the lead in the 43’ minute after Haaland was brought down by Rudiger in the penalty area. Haaland then calmly took the penalty and blasted it past Courtois. The first half ended with a 2-1 lead for Man City.

The second half started with Real Madrid upping their intensity and went for more attacking, while now, Manchester City were trying to hit Real Madrid from the counter attack.

With more aggressive play, Real Madrid got plenty of chances, but all failed to be converted into a goal. The 2-1 lead of Man City stood until the game ended.
