Liverpool faced Inter Milan in the Champions League’s league phase with both teams aiming to be in the top eight of the league phase.

Liverpool came without some names in the attacking area, like Cody Gakpo who has injured, Federico Chiesa who has not been named in the UCL squad by Arne Slot since the start of the season, and ultimately without Mohammad Salah who probably excluded after hi comment toward Arne Slot After the Leeds United game.

Meanwhile Inter Milan came with their best team, maybe only losing Matheo Darmian who has been injured, and Denzel Dumfries who is still in recovery from his ankle injury.

Without Salah, Gakpo, and Chiesa, Arne Slot decided to play Curtis Jones and Hugo Ekitike as wingers in his 4-3-3 formation. Florian Wirtz started the match from the bench and Joel Gomez played at right fullback as Conor Bradley was benched for rotation.

The game started with both teams seeming to just try not to lose points and just avoiding making mistakes. Many fans were calling it a game of chess because there was no huge risk to win the game. But the game went a bit more physical from both sides, as there were many moments where hard contact happened to win the ball.

Gravenberch  tried a long shot that was easily saved by Yan Sommer, Ibrahima Konate scored a header from a corner kick before it was ruled out for handball by the VAR. Then right before the half time, Lautaro Martinez got a great chance to score with his header, but Allison could save it. The scoresheet stayed 0-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Arne Slot subbed on Conor Bradley and Florian Wirtz to help with the attack. The overlapping run from Bradley proved to be annoying for Inter Milan defense, and Wirtz movement with and without the ball was confusing Inter’s defense. At the 84’ minute in the game, Wirtz’s shirt was pulled by Bastony in the penalty area. VAR then told the referee to review the incident and ultimately gave Liverpool the penalty.

At 87’ minute, Dominic Szoboazlai executed the penalty with a hard shot. Sommer actually could predict where the ball was gonna be, but the ball was too fast for him. Inter could do nothing to get a goal back, and the match ended with Liverpool bringing three points home from San Siro.

With two games remaining, The Reds still have a chance to get the top eight position. Their remaining two matches will be against Marseille at home and against Qarabag FK away.

For Inter Milan, this result still put them in the top eight with them sitting in 5th position. Their two remaining matches will be hard as they will fly to England to face Premier League leader Arsenal, and Borussia Dortmund as the last match of the league phase.
