One of the upcoming French Series is now facing plagiarism allegations, causing Apple TV to postpone its airing. This thriller series, entitled The Hunt in English, was actually planned to air on 3rd December this year, but the public demand review due to its similarity to a 1976 live-action movie, Shoot.
Starring Cannes and three-time César award winner Benoît Magimel and two-time César winner Mélanie Laurent, its official trailers and all press releases regarding the series have been removed from the sites now.
The production company Gaumont confirmed this news, as they said, “The broadcast of our series The Hunt has been temporarily postponed,”. They stated that they are currently reviewing their production and promise the public that they will take any questions regarding intellectual property matters very seriously.

Appel TV’s The Hunt VS Shoot

Reportedly, the first plagiarism accusation was made by French media expert Clément Garin. As for The Hunt, or known as À l’Ombre des Forêts in French, follows the story of a group consisting of Franck (Magimel) and his longtime friends, who are being targeted by other hunter groups after spending their weekends hunting. The realization of them being hunted is coming after they realized that they are seemingly being stalked, even after they return from their trip.
On the other hand, Shoot was one of Douglas Fairbairn’s thriller works made in 1973, before it was turned into a US/Canadian movie starring Cliff Robertson and Ernest Borgnine. It follows the story of an uber-macho hunter, Rex, with his buddies, who embark on their hunting trip in the Canadian Wilderness. However, what seems to be a good journey turns into a thriller mess when a rival band of hunters they encounter in the forest takes a potshot at Rex’s party and grazes the head of one of his buddies. From then on, the story of kill and killing began until they came back to the civilized area.
From the synopsis, it can be concluded that The Hunt bears some similarities that include character parallels, plot similarities, and thematic explorations. As can be seen:
- Both movies follow the story of male mc and his friends group who went for hunting
- Both movies having the similar plot where the mc being hunted by another hunted
- Both movies have a similar plot where the other hunter group stalks the main character even in daily
- etc.

Not The First Postponed Series This Year

Surprisingly, another Apple TV series, The Savant, is also postponed three days before its scheduled air on September due to the Charlie Kirk shooting accident. It makes The Hunt is not the only and first time series to be pulled out on short notice before its release date this year. Casted in The Savant, Jessica Chastain plays a top-secret investigator who is on a mission to prevent violent attacks by tracing white supremacists and other hate groups online.
Through her Instagram account, the star stated that both she and Apple do not have any involvement with the postponed decision.
“I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately, it is,” she said. “The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honouring their courage feels more urgent than ever.” Until now, the series itself is still hanging without a definite broadcast date.
There are still no follow-up comments regarding this matter from Apple or the production team.
Many fans who feel disappointed regarding the postponement of The Hunt series are pouring their tweets into the Reddit comments column. “What a mess… You’d think someone would’ve cleared all of the rights BEFORE committing to the show and filming an entire season,” commented by @MuptonBossman. Another comment by @braumbles also read, “That’s a huge fuck up from whomever signed off on this too. What a waste of time and resources.”
Legal disputes over plagiarism in media usually hinge on copyright infringement, whether a work copied protected story elements, and past cases like The Terminator settlement or music-industry judgments show that studios often face costly payouts, injunctions, or reputational damage even when similarities are unintentional.
For The Hunt, a confirmed infringement claim not only could delay release, force rewrites or settlements, but also weaken Apple TV’s reputation for rigorous creative oversight, potentially shaking consumer trust and making talent or producers more cautious about future collaborations.
While actors are rarely blamed directly, prolonged controversy can temporarily affect their visibility and casting momentum, and may influence Apple’s future production decisions, leading to stricter IP vetting, higher legal costs, and a more conservative green-lighting process.
