Chelsea faced Atalanta in the Champions League with the hope of getting their first win in December after going with two losses and one draw in all competitions. This lost also means that The Blues are now in the four winless games after their last win came when they beat Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League.

Chelsea led first after Joao Pedro scored his first Champions League goal in his career, after receiving a low cross from Reece James. It was originally ruled out by the referee, but after a long VAR check, the referee gave the goal to the Brazilian. There was not much happening in the first half and the 1-0 lead for The Premier League side stayed.

In the second half, Atalanta  played with more intensity, and 10 minutes into the second half, the former West Ham man, Gianluca Scamacca find the equalizer after he was unmarked at the far post and easily scored a header after a good cross from Charles De Ketelaere.

After Atalanta equalized the score, Chelsea tried to regain the lead and keep attacking with high intensity. But, at 83’ minute, De Ketelaere. Who previously assisted the goal, scored his goal through a beautiful solo run that finished with a good shot to beat Robert Sanchez.

Atalanta won the game, but Chelsea were actually ahead in some aspect like the number shot and target and corner kicks. Atalanta despite having less shot in targets than The Blues, they still had better Expected goals (xG) with 1.78 xG compared to Chelsea’s 1.24

Chelsea had to go home with nothing and the bad run of form continued for Enzo Maresca and his team. This is also their fifth Champions League away loss. The last time they won a Champions League away game was in October of 2022.

With this result, Chelsea are now sitting in the 11th position of the Champions League table, it will be quite hard for them as they have potentially two wins in the remaining two games to finish in the top eight and automatically qualify to the round of 16.

In the remaining fixtures of the Champions League’s league phase, Chelsea will meet Pafos at Stamford Bridge and they will be back to Italy to face Napoli. If The Blues failed to finish in the top eight, they will have to play in the two legs knock out round to challenge the 8 remaining slots in the round of 16.

Atalanta meanwhile currently sit in the 3rd after this win, but there are teams who are yet to play their game (PSG, Dortmund, Real Madrid, Man City), and will play on Wednesday night. They will hope that some teams will drop points for them to stay in the top eight.

Atalanta’s remaining matches in the league phase are against Athletic Club at home and Union Saint-Gilloise away.
