On its official website, one of the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturers, Apple, announced the resignation of its AI chief, John Giannandrea, from his position on Monday.
The sudden announcement immediately raised questions about the reasons behind the AI boss’s resignation. Especially as the company is rumored to be launching a major update, including AI features for its Siri, next year. Curious? Here are the full details:

The Sudden Retirement: The Continuous Delayment of Siri Update?

Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 after previously leading Google’s Search and AI division. His arrival was seen as a strategic move to improve Siri’s capabilities, which had lagged behind competitors. His official title at the company was senior vice president for machine learning and AI strategy.
But things changed earlier this year. In March, the big tech delayed the release of a more personalized version of Siri with AI-powered features, admitting that its development had taken longer than expected.
“Take us longer than we thought,” it said.
A Bloomberg report even suggested that CEO Tim Cook had lost confidence in Giannandrea and had appointed Mike Rockwell—the leader of the Vision Pro project—to take over coordination of the AI team, while Giannandrea will remain an advisor until his retirement in spring 2026. However, it seems that Giannandrea has withdrawn in advance from the plan, this December.
Thus, it is alleged that the continuous delay for AI features for Siri became one of the main factors behind the company’s AI boss’s sudden retirement.

Will Impacted The Next Apple’s Siri Update?

Now the public is left wondering whether Giannandrea’s departure will affect Siri updates. However, the company has taken a step by appointing Amar Subramanya as vice president of AI, replacing Giannandrea.
Subramanya himself is not a stranger to the world of machine learning. He spent 16 years at Google before joining Microsoft as a corporate VP of AI last July. At Apple, Subramanya will lead the development of the company’s AI models, machine learning research, and AI security.
Unlike the former vice president, Subramanya will report to one of CEO Tim Cook’s deputies, Craig Federighi, rather than to Cook directly.
As Cook always notes in his statement that AI has long been a key component of the company’s strategy, “AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple,”
“With Apple Intelligence, we’ve introduced dozens of new features that are powerful, intuitive, private, and deeply integrated into the things people do every day,” Cook adds.
Although there is still nothing specific offered, the company is targeting an upgraded Siri launch next spring. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple plans to utilize a customized version of Google’s Gemini AI model to power several new features in its digital assistant.
Thus, the sudden retirement seems to be more like a challenge for the company to fasten its work so the next update can be launched according to the previously planned time.
“We’re making good progress on it, and, as we’ve shared, we expect to release it next year,” Cook said in late October.
