Manchester United’s flop goalkeeper, Andre Onana is not called by his country, Cameroon for the African Cup of Nations. It is yet another huge blow that happened to his career after earlier this season he lost his place at United as the first choice goalkeeper and loaned out to the Turkish’s side, Trabzonspor.
The announcement of the Cameroon squad for AFCON was released on Monday, and to everyone’s surprise, the name of the 29-year old was not there in the squad list. Onana was expected to take part in the tournament at Morocco this year, but Cameroon’s head coach might have another idea about him.
On the other hand, Manchester United’s summer signing, Bryan Mbuemo and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are selected to feature in the tournament. Baleba who has been linked with The Red Devils has not been in his best performance this season, and some believe that it happens because of the reports that Brighton blocked his move to Old Trafford.
The Cameroon Football Federation led by Samuel Eto’o, the former Inter Milan and Barcelona Striker, announce the squad list for the AFCON the same day as the announcement that they sacked Marc Brys as the National Team’s manager and replaced him with David Pagou only three weeks before the tournament starts.
Andre Onana has 53 caps for Cameroon under his belt and he played a full 90 match against DR Congo in their 1-0 defeat that closed the door for Cameroon to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA and Canada.

This season, after his departure from Manchester United, Onana has made 10 appearances for Trabzonspor and kept three clean sheets during that time.
Manchester United’s Manager Comment About Onana
Andre Onana was supposed to be United’s no.1 goalkeeper after he was signed from Inter Milan two years ago for £47.2 million. Not a small amount of fee for him to have a difficult career in England.
He lost his place to Bayindir during pre-season and first three Premier League games due to a hamstring injury. He was then allowed to leave the club to join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan deal. United then signed Royal Antwerp’s goalkeeper, Senne Lammens who currently shows solid performances as Man United first choice goalkeeper.

“We saw Andre had a very, very good season in Inter,” he said. ‘The quality is there, but we are in the club sometimes, in the moment, things are getting harder and harder. And you can be really experienced. But in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail. Sometimes you need a change.”
“I think we understood that he needed a change. Sometimes it’s hard to point why. It’s the performance, the moments. The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, and it was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers.”
“I wish the best for Andre. He was really good at working, trying to help the players. Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level. That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from Andre.”
Andre Onana only has one appearance for United this season, and that was when United was embarrassingly beaten by Grimsby by penalty in the Carabao Cup.
