Police in Ohio released a K9 on a black man who got out of a car with his hands up after a traffic chase earlier this month, gruesome body camera footage showed.
The incident came to light on July 4 after law enforcement officers engaged in a lengthy pursuit of a semi-tractor trailer driven by 23-year-old Zadarius Rose.
The vehicle was missing a mud flap and it failed to stop for an inspection, according to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
After the stop, Rose got out with his hands up and Officer Ryan Speakman of the Circleville Police Department released a police dog on Rose despite a state police trooper telling the local officer not to release the K9.
“Don’t let the dog go – with his hands up,” the state police officer can be heard yelling in the video.
Police in Ohio launched a K9 on a black man who got out of his car with his hands up after a traffic stop earlier this month, according to officials.
City Public Safety Director Douglas Debord told local media that the city is currently reviewing the incident involving K-9 Officer Ryan Speakman.
About 40 minutes of body camera footage has been released detailing the July 4 incident.
After the chase, the car stopped on a state highway about 40 miles south of Columbus when authorities deployed tire deflation devices known as ‘stop sticks’ a second time.
In a video provided by the Highway Patrol, Rose is seen standing in front of the car as law enforcement officers order him to the ground.
The footage shows the dog running towards Rose on its knees, biting and pulling the driver.
Rose screamed loudly and was heard saying, ‘Please take it off.’
‘Get the dog away from him!’ A soldier shouted.
Other officers are heard on video pleading for first aid and medical treatment for Rose.
‘As troopers were attempting to gain compliance by giving verbal commands to the suspect, the Circleville Police Department deployed their dog, which resulted in the suspect being bitten by the dog,’ the highway patrol said in a statement.
The dog was released by Speakman, and Circleville officials have not said if he has been placed on leave, according to WOSU.
Rose asked the officers as they released the dog and ordered the K9 to attack.
‘You just let the dog bite me,’ said Rose. The officer told Rose to just listen to his orders.
