Richard Eden: Of course we stand to congratulate our future queen! So why did Daniel Craig sit in the Royal Box with his shades on as Kate approached? It’s time to learn some manners Mr. Bond!

It’s a delicate question of etiquette: When meeting the Princess of Wales, how should royalty behave—Hollywood royalty, that is?
Richard Eden, editor of the Daily Mail Diary, expressed his opinion:
James Bond actor Daniel Craig and wife Rachel Weisz should have been on their feet when Kate approached them in the Royal Box on Sunday – as a sign of respect if not general good behaviour, he told his followers on Instagram.
Sharing a photo in which the Princess of Wales can be seen talking to the celebrity pair, she wrote:
‘This picture makes me uncomfortable. Even though Rachel Weisz Carty or Daniel Craig didn’t have room to bow, shouldn’t they have at least stood up to greet the Princess of Wales?
It’s great sport: Rachel Weisz and husband Daniel Craig sit as they chat with Catherine, Princess of Wales in the Royal Box at Wimbledon. The editor of the Daily Mail Diary, Richard Eden, disapproves…
‘James Bond needs to learn some basic manners,’ agreed one commenter on Instagram
‘Craig could even go crazy and take off his sunglasses.’
It should be noted that fellow actor James Norton, star of Happy Valley and War and Peace, was able to stand to greet the princess.
But Eden’s approach has caused some controversy.
‘Behave Richard,’ admonished one commenter. ‘There are also pictures of Prince William and Prince George chatting with Danielle, who was sitting down. I really don’t think they were too bothered.’
‘Please get a hold of yourself. Not everyone worships your royalty,’ said another.
Others speculated that the princess asked the couple to sit down.
Eden had plenty to take sides.
‘I was the same thing when I saw him shake their hands,’ agrees one devotee of traditional courtesies. ‘Wait man!’
According to another commenter: ‘They didn’t stand up to greet the King of Spain….’James Bond needs to learn some basic etiquette.’
Or as another put it succinctly: ‘A complete lack of manners and/or awareness.’
Speaking in The Mail’s new Royals section, Eden said:
‘Even if you’re Hollywood royalty, it’s basic courtesy to stand when someone comes to talk to you, no matter who they are. When that person is our future queen, it’s even more important.’
Actor James Norton attended the event while speaking with the Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte at Wimbledon.
But Daniel Craig was happy to sit down next to the heir to the throne. At least Prince George seems to get the idea
Others, however, disagreed with Eden – some vehemently – sparking controversy about the place of modern honor.
Commentators weigh in on both sides
‘I understand that nowadays people only bow to the king. I think it’s a shame. In my opinion, they should extend the same courtesy to our future queen.
‘It’s certainly not a mistake that James Bond would have made while in Her Majesty’s Secret Service.’
