Wonky photos? iPhone trick automatically straightens your snaps – here’s how to try it
A new camera leveling function will help you straighten your iPhone photos, a feature not available until the next iOS 17 update, expected in September
Apple’s iOS 17 update is set to offer some handy new features, including a helpful camera trick that will straighten out your photos.
The iPhone camera already comes with a few optional settings to help you improve your shots, including a grid that can be overlaid on the viewfinder to help apply the rule of thirds.
But with iOS 17, which is set to launch this fall, Apple has improved the camera leveling function by separating it from grid mode.
The new update makes leveling a separate option and can be found in the somewhat hidden feature settings.
Apple’s iOS 17 update is set to offer some handy new features, including a helpful camera trick that will straighten out your photos.
To access the new feature, users need to open the Settings app, click on Camera and scroll down to Layers.
Once you slide the toggle switch, you can go back to your camera app to find three horizontal white lines.
If you tilt your phone, you’ll notice that there are two short lines that stay still, while the long line in the center moves with your phone.
To make sure your photos are straight, you need to line up the three lines, once the line turns yellow you will know your photos are perfectly balanced.
The new feature removes the extra step of straightening your photos after you take them, and can even help you figure out how to level your phone without it.
The feature isn’t available until the next iOS 17 update, which is expected to arrive with the iPhone 15 launch in September.
A number of other exciting features are set to be added, including standby mode, which will enable a smart display while charging your phone and in landscape mode.

No more ‘duck’ typing The new iOS 17 update improves the autocorrect feature to better predict what you’ll type next
This will effectively turn your iPhone into a desk or nightstand clock, which can help busy phone owners.
Autocorrect will also be an improvement, and the keyboard will use a transformer model to better predict what you’ll type next, with the feature also able to help with grammar.
The new update will add a journal app called Journal to help iPhone owners manage stress. The feature will generate personalized prompts and you’ll be able to set notifications to remind yourself to write.
In addition, Apple’s neural engine, iOS17 will be able to transcribe incoming voicemails live, a feature called Live Voicemail, which allows users to judge whether they want to pick up or ignore the call based on the incoming message.
However, not all iPhone users will be able to download the new update on them as there will be a cutoff for some older iPhone models, including the iPhone X from 2017.
The list of iPhones that will get the feature only dates back to 2018 – iPhone XS and up, which includes the popular iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR.
