Popular skincare brand Cetaphil's correct pronunciation shocks thousands: 'I had no idea'

Thousands of people are shocked to learn that the name of the skincare company ‘Cetaphil’ has been mispronounced all their lives.

The company – which was founded in 1947 by an American pharmacist – is pronounced ‘SEE-ta-fill’ rather than ‘SET-a-fill’.

The facial wash and moisturizer range is named after cetyl alcohol, its main ingredient.

After decades of confusion, Cetaphil has officially confirmed how to pronounce the moniker — and many still can’t wrap their heads around it.

‘It’s confidential – here’s how to pronounce our brand name,’ the company revealed. The accent is also used in radio and TV commercials for the brand.

Skincare lovers around the world are shocked to discover that dermatologist-recommended skincare line ‘Cetaphil’ has been mispronouncing them all their lives.

Many have expressed mixed reactions to the news after seeing the post.

‘It’s just wrong,’ said one man. ‘I’ve been calling it ‘seh-ta-fil’ (like set) since I was 11, so about 18 years. It’s too late to change!’

‘Huh? We’ve been using lotion for 30 years now, and you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,’ wrote another.

‘What? It needs to be changed to ‘set-a-fill’ – it’s just right,’ argued a third.

But others were happy to get their version right.

‘I’ve always been pronounced that way, so I’m glad I was right this time,’ revealed one skincare lover.

‘I’ve pronounced it like that all my life. I always thought if it was supposed to be pronounced ‘set-a-feel’ it would have two ‘t’s,’ said a second.

Another wrote, ‘To-ma-to, to-ma-to! No matter how it is pronounced, the product is wonderful. I’ve been using the cleansing bar and moisturizer for years and love it!’

However, Cetaphil’s mispronunciation was not the only shock to the beauty community.

Makeup lovers recently discovered they’ve been mispronouncing popular beauty brand Nyx Cosmetics, too.

The makeup brand was founded in 1999 and is named after the Greek goddess of the night – and pronounced ‘Nix’ rather than NYX or Nikes.

After years of confusion on Twitter, the company has now confirmed how to pronounce the moniker.

‘It’s pronounced NIX not NYX or NIKES,’ Nyx Cosmetics wrote on Twitter, to the disbelief of tens of thousands.

The name of the Greek goddess is also pronounced this way.

Others said they were pronouncing ‘this whole time’ correctly and didn’t understand those who weren’t.

‘People are still so unknown? To be honest, I only know the correct pronunciation because of RuPaul’s Drag Race. I was guilty of calling it NYX,’ wrote one.

‘So I’ve been pronouncing it correctly since I was 10,’ added another.

It’s not the only beauty brand that has caused confusion with its name.

In the past, people have struggled with the popular brand Glossier (pronounced Gloss-ee-yay as opposed to Gloss-ee-r), as well as hair brand Kerastase (pronounced care-ah-stahs care-ah- not. Having). .
