Mother slammed for reducing daughter to tears with cruel criticism during wedding dress fitting

A mother who describes herself as the ‘face of the south’ has been branded ‘toxic’ after she reduced her daughter to tears with a series of cruel criticisms during her wedding dress fitting.

Taylor Kirkpatrick, 20, of Atlanta, Georgia, appeared on an episode of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress in 2012 — hoping to find the perfect dress before her upcoming wedding to longtime boyfriend Dustin Johnson.

However, choosing her gown didn’t go as well as she’d hoped – because her mother, Cindy Kirkpatrick, had some very strong opinions about what she should wear and wasn’t shy about making them known.

Not only did Cindy hurt her own daughter’s body during the shopping trip, but she also ripped apart all the gowns she tried on, except for the one she picked out herself – and many people on the web were horrified by her ‘horrific’ actions.

However, picking out her gown didn’t go as well as she’d hoped – as her mum, Cindy Kirkpatrick (seen), had some very strong opinions about what she should wear.

Not only did Cindy hit on her own daughter’s body during the shopping trip, she also destroyed every gown she tried on, except for the one she picked out herself.

She Yes to the Dress’ YouTube account recently shared footage of Cindy Railing in her daughter during the episode, and it sparked fierce criticism for the self-proclaimed ‘southern face’.

The video begins with Taylor’s personal consultant, Flo, asking her what she is looking for in her wedding dress and she explains that she likes ‘lace’ and ‘mermaid’ style gowns.

She Yes to the Dress’ YouTube account shared footage of her daughter Cindy railing during the episode, and it sparked fierce criticism for the Atlanta-based mom, who described herself as the ‘face of the South.’

Immediately, her mother gave the camera a dirty look before interjecting, ‘Personally, I like glitter that looks like wraps. [fabric] around you.’

Taylor was unhappy with the idea and quickly scrapped it. She said: ‘He wants me to look like a layer cake.

‘Mom, I love you, but your mouth is as big as your heart. You are Miss Mouth of the South.’

Cindy didn’t seem bothered by the nickname, in fact, she fully embraced it, adding, ‘I might as well be the face of North, East and West.’

Taylor’s father, who said he had been separated from Cindy ‘for a while’, then warned the audience during his confession: ‘Cindy is very opinionated.’

When it came time to try on some dresses, Cindy and Rick each chose one that they thought would look best on Taylor for her big day.

When it came time to try on some dresses, Taylor’s parents both chose the one they thought would look best on her for her big day. He first tried his father’s choice (see).

Cindy was not a fan. He said, ‘It’s ugly. I don’t like anything about it. It’s a beautiful dress for someone else, not just her.’ She also told her daughter she was ‘too restless’ for the style.

Next, Taylor tried on the gown her mother had chosen — a lacy number with a plunging neckline and flowers all over.

‘It’s beautiful,’ Cindy gushed at her daughter in the dress. But Taylor’s dad interjects, ‘Sweetheart, that dress just doesn’t do it for you,’ and she agrees.

First, she tried on her father’s favorite – an ivory silk trumpet dress with intricate lace embellishments.

She told the cameras she was drawn to it because of its ‘simplicity’, explaining, ‘I want it to be more about her than her clothes.’

Putting it immediately, Taylor was surprised. She exclaimed: ‘Oh, well done father. I wouldn’t even pick this. It’s beautiful.’

But unfortunately, Cindy wasn’t a fan. He asked, ‘Are you kidding me?’ Before adding to the camera, ‘It’s ugly, can I say ugly?

‘I don’t like any of it. It’s a nice dress for someone else I’m sure. Not just her.’

Cindy then told her daughter she was ‘too restless’ for the style, explaining to the 20-year-old, ‘Your [chest] Need to cover more. The dress isn’t for you, that’s clear.’

‘It’s beautiful,’ Cindy gushed at her daughter in the dress. But her father interjected, ‘It’s not quite Taylor. Honey, that dress just doesn’t do it for you. Next.’

‘Excuse me?’ An angry Cindy shot back at him, a scowl on her face.

In the end, Taylor agreed with her father and took the dress off. He explained, ‘I spent my last 20 years trying to please my mother. Now, I’m a grown woman and it’s time for me to please myself.’

Next, Taylor wore a dress that an employee approached — and she immediately realized it was her.

The tiered, lacy gown came with a gorgeous beaded belt around her waist and the bride was so in love with it that she almost burst into tears when she saw herself in it.

‘As soon as I put on that dress, all I saw was beauty,’ she gushed. ‘I love it, it makes me cry. I think it’s very beautiful.’

‘Can I say something? I like the other dress better. I’m not feeling it,’ Cindy said. ‘I’m glad it makes you all bubbly and emotional but it just doesn’t do it for me’

Despite her mother’s disdain for the pair, Taylor insisted she found one and she officially said yes to the dress

After seeing the complete look with the veil and all, her mother finally came around. She said it was ‘beautiful’ and ‘special’ and added that she was ‘proud of Taylor for standing up for herself’.

An emotional Taylor compared her mother to a ‘bulldozer’ running over her ‘happiness’ during a private chat with the camera.

‘My mother never let anyone else sway her beliefs or opinions and that’s what she taught me,’ Taylor concluded.

‘That’s what I did today, I didn’t want anyone to shake my opinion of my outfit – and I didn’t.’

Viewers of the clip were left in an uproar over Cindy’s behaviour, with many branding her ‘toxic’ and ‘creepy’ – with some insisting she seemed ‘jealous’ of the close bond her daughter shares with her father.

‘Mother’s jealousy of father daughter relationship is literally ripping her skin out,’ wrote one.

‘It saddens me to see mum being treated like a toxic person. I’m glad the girl was strong enough to choose what she wanted,’ added another.

‘Truly I’d be a daddy’s girl too if I’d had a mother like that,’ cried a third.

One person noted that it was rich for Cindy to have such strong opinions when she didn’t even pay for the dress, writing: ‘That mom was toxic. What a horrible woman… she’s not even paying for it.’
